Wells Beach

1mi away. Wells Beach is the closest beach to the cottage. It is also the main beach in Wells. During low tide, the beach is a 7-mile stretch of sand lined with beachfront homes. There is a section of dunes with paths that connect to the salt marsh, which fronts the Belle of Maine.

Parking: The lot at the end of Mile Rd does fill rather quickly because it’s free. There is additional metered parking on Mile Rd.

Facilities: There are bathrooms and a restaurant with ice cream available.

High Tide: Much of the main beach disappears at high tide. You can still find dry beach but be prepared to walk up the street and take a small access alley further up Atlantic Ave.

Drake’s Island Beach

3.4mi away. Probably the favorite among locals. This beach includes some tide pool areas (which kids adore) and a jetty for scrambling.

Parking: There are three lots, all paid.

  1. Gross lot is on the left-hand side of Drake’s Island Rd before the road stops at t-stop. This is my least favorite lot as it requires a decent walk along the street to reach the beach.

  1. The handicapped lot is straight past the stop sign. There are maybe 4-6 spots available with direct beach access.

  2. The jetty lot is our preferred lot. At the stop sign, turn right and follow the road around several twists and turns until you see the lot on the left. It can still be a drag to walk all the way to the main beach but in our minds, the beach is worth it.

Facilities: There are bathrooms at the lots but some are portapotties.

High Tide: The side near the Jetty Lot is still wide open at high tide.

Wells Harbor Beach

1.9mi away. This beach disappears at high tide, but is great for kids at mid-and low tide, when there are many sand bars and tidal pools with crabs. It has restroom facilities, a playground, picnic tables, and free parking. Seals are spotted here at certain times of the day. I personally haven’t had luck seeing them but I’ve seen plenty of pictures.

Parking: free

Facilities: Restrooms

High Tide: No beach available

Moody Beach

3mi away. This is a private beach; however, if you plan to just go for a walk, it’s a long and lovely stroll that connects to North Beach, Footbridge and Ogunquit Beach at low tide.

Parking: none

Facilities: None

High Tide: No beach available

Crescent Beach

1.9mi away. A small, rocky, quiet beach that disappears at high tide. This is a great quiet beach at low tide, perfect for little snail and crab hunters.

Parking: Free at the sea wall or paid in a small lot.

Facilities: Restrooms available

High Tide: No beach available.
