Casual Dining in Wells

breakfast favorite:

Congdon’s Doughnuts

breakfast

Known throughout New England, this deliciously decadent breakfast joint is just across the street from our cottage. You NEED to stop in or no one will believe that you visited Wells. Ok, that’s maybe a slight exaggeration, but they are delightful. They sell out every morning so set your alarm clock and make it an early visit, especially if you’re eyeing a specific doughnut. They also have breakfast sandwiches and burritos if you aren’t feeling the sweets. Bonus, bonus: they sometimes have “mimosa kits” to go. Again, this is a VERY popular spot so plan accordingly and please be patient with the sweet kids who work there. They are dealing with a lot of hangry doughnut lovers.

Maine Diner

breakfast and lunch

This is the go-to for your typical American diner breakfast or lunch with a few Maine features thrown in like the lobster benedict and lobster melt. It gets very busy during peak tourist season to prepare yourself and go early or order take-away.

Chef Jacques Crepe Wagon

breakfast and lunch

This is a little gem. We LOVE Chef Jacques. He has sweet and savory crepes that are very yummy and he’s such a joy to chat with. His fish chowder is also very good. There are some picnic tables to eat at or you can take them to go. He’s a one-man show so be a bit patient and go earlier in the day as he sells out of things every day.

Bread and Roses

breakfast and sweets

This little bakery is a common recommendation among locals. If you’re looking to sample the traditional Maine whoopie pie this would be your place.

Pro-tip: you can order online and skip the line.

Congdon’s After Dark

dinner

They’re at it again. This time, it’s not breakfast (although their doughnuts to make their way into beer), but it’s dinner. We bring our kids here quite often. After 4pm, Congdon’s turns into a food truck park with beer garden, live music, and a great area for kids to run around and play. The food trucks change fairly regularly so make sure to check their site for updates. Also, it gets decently busy so we recommend going earlier.
